been slowly getting into stoner rock/metal, had only heard the essentials before, like kyuss's big 2 and boris. anyway here's a great stoner metal album, and one that's flown under the radar completely i think
Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
-http://rapidshare.com/files/90840798/Acid_Bath_-_1994_-_When_The_Kite_String_Pops_By_Reincremated.rar
thanks for that upload kaleb, i'd been meaning to look into those guys. |

| I've always associated Acid Bath more with straight Sludge-Metal (by the original definition). It is a great band/album though. |

Either
A) find it on mediafire/megaupload/rapidshare and post the link
or B) go to those websites and upload the album |

So, the Om show was prettyyyyy epic lastnight. My friend and I smoked up in the lot and went in there, so we were high for the first two sets, which especially made the Lichens set incredible. This guy does a bunch of vocal layering and buildup with one of those sampler/recorder things, and this fucking piece that he did was just fucking epiiiic. Had all these really low cavernous moans and echoes with really loud/shrieked chants and other trippy earthy noises he was making, just slowly stacking them on top of each other. Only problem being he had these electronic/siren like beeps/alarm noises that were waaay too loud for a lil bit, and I thought my eyes were gonna blow out of my head while they were ringing. Otherwise, what a fucking trip, just evoked images of wandering through magic forests into mountain caverns, and then when he does teh big growl/huffing thing it was just coming in contact with the balrog, lol. Yep, I'm a fucking nerd who thinks of these things, whatevs whatevs.
Next act Six Organs of Admittance was pretty damn boring, and kind of a killer really. Started off with harmless-enough harmony-centric guitar and vocal pieces, but went into really fast blast-beat driven noodling as soon as the drummer got on stage. Disposable post-rock, aka postwash.
Om were fucking epic. I've never seen a crowd so in tune with each other and the music, just all slowly bobbing their heads. Louder than hell, I should have really had some excedrin for that trip, but it was totally awesome. That bass just shook the whole fucking place, lol. Lichens also joined them up on stage, providing some nice guitar, vocal, and tambourine flourishes to their music, which made seeing them live a lil more interesting than they tend to be on album. I love their music, but this show was just sort of proof that they need to move on and add some other musicians/instrumentalists to their band. But man, was great.
And the venue was perfect. Just sitting there baked outta my mind for the first hour and a half watching boats off in the distance was wonderful. I also lol'd when fans were going up to the amps after the show taking pictures because they were all damaged and blown out. |

In an attempt to be constructive and helpful rather than being a complete asshole...
Stoner rock/metal is a genre/subgenre thing that is typically pretty heavy/sludgy in sound or atmposphere, typically warmer and bass-heavy. Imagine Black Sabbath's heaviness, but in a more modern context it tends to be both abrasive yet comforting? that's how I typically see it anyways, here's a wiki to help out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_rock
Essentials/Greatest
-Electric Wizard (The gold standard, the brvtalaity, the grooviness, the complete stoner package. Must hear)
Albums to hear: Dopethrone, Come, My Fanatics, We Live
-Boris (just as much noise-rock as it is stoner rock/metal, they bring the two together very well)
Albums to hear: Akuma No Uta, Pink
-The Sword (Very heavy metal in nature, imagine a Led Zep/Black Sabbath Hybrid, very good intro to metal/hard-rock oriented listeners while still exposing them to the sludgy, warm atmosphere of stoner rock)
Albums to hear: Age of Winters
-Sleep (At their prime, just a sort-of bluesy/slightly cleaner Electric Wizard)
Albums to hear: Sleep's Holy Mountain, Dopesmoker (this is pretty much a 50 minute song, it's love or hate, I recommend not trying to do this right away, lol. It is sloooow)
Those are some starting places, there are quite a few more. And yes, they live up to the genre name: all work in their own way for perfect stoner music. Hope you enjoy. If you need uploads or want anymore detail on them, holla back and i'll try to help you out, sitting in class atm. |

to the same guy who told me 'indie sucks' and 'you don't believe in god, you're hopeless', i think i'm okay being an ass.
cool story with the Om show though, the venue must have only augmented the experience. |

| the blatant nonsense/sarcasm of the god comment flew right over your head, and I'll own up to ignorance to any indie comments back two years ago. At this point though I would like to build bridges and expand people's tastes rather than alienate and burn them, if possible. |

Probably one of the top 5 shows that i've ever seen.
I still can't really find the words to describe Lichens' set. The more I think about it the more it seems like one of the most amazing things i've seen in my life. For 35 minutes a man with some digital delay, a loop pedal, a microphone, and his voice takes you on a trip through the depths of hell before settling you in to a small piece of heaven. It was a fucking experience to say the least and I highly recommend anyone who gets the chance to check him out.
Like Clamz said, Six Organs of Admittance started off fine enough with some really dark, morbid folksy songs. But once the drummer came on and started grabbing all sorts of shitty shit shit from his little milk crate of shit he had set up next to him it was downhill. I'd like to pretend that the 10 minute free-jazz jam at the end of their set never happened thank you very much.
Om melted my fucking face. That is all. |
