I think its about time... it's already the last year of the decade, and the lists for the greatest albums and artists of the 00s have long been done.

Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rehab - Amy Winehouse
Supermassive Black Hole - Muse
Mr. Brightside - The Killers
Fallin' - Alicia Keys
No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age
Someday - The Strokes
B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad) - OutKast
Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire
Made You Look - Nas

"Smooth" was out in summer 1999--in fact it's number 22 on the 90s list. Could arguably be higher here, but it doesn't qualify here.

Just some other songs that come to my mind:

I'm Yours - Jason Mraz (longest running song on Hot 100 ever, with airplay on tons of formats)
Let's Get It Started - Black Eyed Peas
Boom Boom Pow - Black Eyed Peas
Get This Party Started - Pink
Angel - Shaggy f/ Rayvon
How You Remind Me - Nickleback (crappy record, IMNSHO, but there's no denying its success and impact)
Dilemma - Nelly f/ Kelly Rowland (and/or possibly one of the other big Nelly hits)
SexyBack - Justin Timberlake
Cry Me A River - Justin Timberlake
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
I Will Possess Your Heart - Death Cab For Cutie
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Float On - Modest Mouse
Low - Flo Rida
Lonely - Akon

I'm not sure if some of the American Idol alumni hits ("Since U Been Gone", "Before He Cheats") should be considered rock. Lots of country stuff to consider that certainly is rock influenced (most country music today owes more to the Eagles than to Hank Williams). I'm sure there will be others to consider.

I tried to order the songs on the first post using our usual criteria of greatness. I wasnt completely sure about it so I didnt numbered them.
I believe the possible positions for the top 15 songs are:

Top 1-2
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Hey Ya! - OutKast
Top 3-4
Clocks - Coldplay
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
Top 5-15
Lose Yourself - Eminem
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
Crazy in Love - Beyonce feat. Jay-Z
Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand
Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliott
All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem
Last Nite - The Strokes
Umbrella - Rihanna feat. Jay-Z
Yellow - Coldplay
Heartbeat - Annie
Stan - Eminem

And then I dont know.

Very good remindings Brett. Some more great ones:

Survivor - Destiny's Child
Toxic - Britney Spears
This Love - Maroon 5
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Everybody's Changing - Keane
Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon
19/2000 - Gorillaz
Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz
Brainstorm - Arctic Monkeys
Flourescent Adolescent - Arctic Monkeys
Galang - M.I.A.
The Rat - The Walkmen
Wax Simulacra - Mars Volta
This Fire - Franz Ferdinand
Somebody Told Me - The Killers
When You Were Young - The Killers
Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard (A True Story) - !!!

I just realized that and was going to post about it now. It wont be considered anymore.

I wonder if Daft Punk's One More Time should be considered pure progressive house, or it could pass as a dance pop song, because if so it would probably be a top 15 song.

I dont know what to say about Cashs Hurt. It is arguable I think.

Would this list include any of that godawful crunk (if it counts a hip-hop/rap subgenre)?...

Wait, nvm, just saw the BEP...

and nvm, just found that OutKast counts as crunk... broadens my definition just a bit...

1. No it doesn't have to
2. Those were only suggestions
3. OutKast aren't crunk. They're alternative hip-hop at best.

Couldn't re-edit in time to make sure that read correctly...

American Idiot has somehow not been mentioned yet... or Mr. Brightside, 100 Years, Are You Gonna Be My Girl, A Moment Like This, You're Beautiful (as awful as it is), SexyBack. Just to name a few.

White and Nerdy for Novelty Hit of the Decade.

Get this list to 100 quickly.
DDD is sorely lacking in new songs lists.
Sad

Right on.

What we need:
1. a good criterion (influence/chart success/lasting popularity/yada yada)
2. A list which encompasses the most important/criterion fulfilling songs in the various prominent genres of the decade, especially the three dominating genres of the 2000's: pop, hip hop and indie rock. Songs like "Crazy", "Paper Planes" and "Hey Ya!"which were successful with fans of all three of these genres should be dully noted as well.

Look at other lists for help with other suggestions. Pitchfork's five part Top 500 Songs of the 2000's list especially. I know a few of our posters don't care for Pitchfork's way of reviewing things, but many agree that P4K knows a good song when they see one, so their list would be of great help in building ours.

I love this song to death, but it looks really out of place in the Top 25.

Kanye West's "Gold Digger" might be a top 25. It's a highly acclaimed song that went double platinum.

I was actually working on this list for awhile and still kind of am. I just have been holding off on it the past year or so. However I won't lock this thread because I don't think there is a place to discuss it.

Anyways as for the top of the list I am thinking the top 3 ought to be Hey Ya!, Lose Yourself, and Crazy.

just realized Skullkid's version of the list is missing "One More Time". Really, that's Top 20 of the decade easily.
